From the Principal
Welcome back to Term 4 - it always provides plenty of opportunities for parent involvement.
Next Tuesday night, 23 October is our Annual Awards Night and Art display. Many parents make a point of attending the Art display to enjoy some fine foods from Home Economics and a drink prior to the night.
Art Display in K Block starts around 5.00 pm
Awards Night Starts in the Hall at 7.00 pm sharp
(The evening will finish by 9.00 pm)
(psst - at the end of the night the Hall will finally be all ours!)
Our Film and TV Awards Night (K Block) is on Wednesday, 31 October starting at 7.00 pm.
Our Sports Awards Night (Hall) is on Monday, 05 November starting at 7.00 pm.
Our Dance Nights are on at City Hall on Friday, 09 and Saturday, 10 November.
Events for our senior students have gone out in a specific letter to Year 12 parents.
These are great opportunities to see the wonderful work of our students and to celebrate their achievements with us. We all need an audience to celebrate!
Extracurricula Clubs Report

Junior Council
Junior Councillors Alec Higgins, Jackie Whitaker, Lucas Belz, Lyall McDonald and Casey Robertson attended the 2007 Youth Forum held at City Hall and enjoyed the activities that were organised and liaised with other Councillors from around Wide Bay. The also enjoyed listening to special guest speaker, Artie Rock from The Biggest Loser who spoke about positive body image and self esteem in young people. Throughout the day there was a powerpoint presentation that showcased the Special School’s art work. There were team building exercises such as SAO eating contests and to finish, Mr Hickey from St Mary’s led a forum on self esteem and what we can do to improve self esteem in our own schools.

Optiminds
After winning the Regional event, our Optiminds team went to Brisbane to compete in the State Finals. We lost two members because it coincided with the Maryborough Technology Challenge. Mrs Robertson kindly offered to be our facilitator on the day. The whole day is pretty scary. We had to be shut in a room for three hours and work together to come up with a presentation that we had to perform for all the other groups in the afternoon. We worked well as a team and overcame our nerves to present in the afternoon. All in all it was a great experience and we enjoyed ourselves. A big thank you to our parents and especially Mrs Robertson for getting us down there and helping out on the day. We were “Unashamedly Excellent”. Casey, Kiarra, Hayley, Connor and Brooke.

Robotics
Robotics performed really well in the Maryborough Technology Challenge. Here are the results:
1st - Senior Dance—David Nicholson, Jacob Severs and Brendan Clark.
2nd - Junior Dance - Tony Jacobi and Natalia Butler.
1st - Senior Pursuit—Trent Houston.
2nd - Senior Pursuit—John Sutcliffe.
3rd - Senior Pursuit—David Nicholson, Jacob Severs and Brendan Clark.
1st - Junior Pursuit—Thomas Feldman.
2nd - Junior Pursuit—Kyle Hilliard.
1st - Junior Rescue—Kit Gidall.
2nd - Senior Rescue—John Sutcliffe.
3rd - Senior Rescue—Clayton Forknall.
The Seniors also helped out on the Saturday with judging and setting up for the Primary Schools. A big thank you to Mr Ethell for all his work and time.

HPV Report
The Maryborough Technology Challenge was a great success with over 70 HPV teams competing from as far a field as Melbourne and Tannum Sands.
Aldridge, this year, entered three teams. The Senior AMZ Wild Cats team was made up of some experienced riders from past years and also a very keen pit crew. The Wildcats eventually came 33rd and completed 317 laps. Fastest lap time went to a very fresh Tom Einam in the first lap with a lap time of 3 minutes 45 seconds. There were no casualties (except Mollee who cramped on the first lap), however, some students had trouble sleeping with the snoring noises coming from the teachers’ tent (Thanks Mr Ruddy).
The Year 9 team, the Aldridge Adorable Allstars found their pink shirts clashed with the Boltons Pink Ladies, however, this did give them the opportunity to go down and chat these ladies up. Tyler McKenna could not keep his pink shirt on and copped a great deal of ribbing from the radio announcers. This team also had two ring in girls in the team. Jackie and Jess put in great performances and didn’t put up with any rot from the boys. The Allstars came 44th and completed 290 laps with the fastest lap by Cameron Poppi in 3 minutes 41 seconds. This group did suffer some cramping in the middle of the night (Nathan and Tyler Jocumsen needed salt tablets) and a couple of kids looked positively hung over the next day (Hey Alec). But all in all they had a great time and are already planning for next year.
The last group was a very small contingent of Grade 8 boys. Even though there were only five in the team they did very well. They also managed to polish off a whole carton of Powerade in 15 minutes. There was one incident during the night when there was no one to ride the bike but they managed to get back on track and completed 209 laps. They came 64th and the fastest lap was Matt Cunningham with 4 minutes 16 seconds.
We would like to thank all the parents who supported us and generally helped out during the event, especially, Mrs Wheeler, Mr and Mrs McCall, Mrs Allen, Mr and Mrs Poppi, Mrs Higgins and Mrs Krome for doing the midnight shift. We would also like to thank all our sponsors for their kind donations of money and support. Lastly, we would like to thank the teachers who spend hours on these bikes helping us get them ready for race day. They are Mr Wiegand, Mr Ruddy, Mr Goss, Mr Wyllie and Mr Grantz. Without these guys this event would not be the great experience it is.

Fraser District Athletics
The Aldridge Athletics team has done what the Broncos couldn’t do – they have successfully defended their crown. After winning the carnival for the first time last year we have repeated the dose (by a mere 16 points) to once again be the champion school of the district.
It was a great effort by all the students who represented Aldridge on the day – and I do mean ALL. With such a close result, it highlights how important it is for all athletes to compete and earn points. Obviously, those who win events or gain places earn the most points, but plenty of students go in events knowing they probably won’t win or gain a place. You should all be very proud of yourselves – I certainly am.
Once again we had some terrific individual results:

Ø Daniel O’Brien: 15 years boys age champion
Ø George Sauila: 16 years boys age champion
Ø David Ball: 15 years boys age champion
Ø Alice Williams broke the district record in the 16 years girls division for discus (throwing from grass!), shot put and javelin.
Gr Great team effort in everything especially the relays.
We have 30 students going to the regional athletics carnival in Kingaroy in the last week of this term. We wish them the best of luck and I look forward to giving you their results

During week 9 of Term 3 the Aldridge Rams registered their third win. Playing in difficult conditions again, they were too strong for St. Marys.
Final Scores were:
Aldridge Rams 3.11.29 def St. Marys 1.2.8
Goal Scorers: Zac Edmondstone, Davin Walker and Sam Chew.
Best: David Ball (Best on ground). Daniel Beatty, Tim O’Brien, Zac Edmondstone.
The Rams final game was the last Monday of term against Xavier College. Xavier forfeited the match, which was disappointing, but it did put the Rams into top position in the Lions Cup competition. This means the Rams were Fraser District champions. They will contest the Wide Bay final in Bundaberg in the second week of Term 4. The photos here were from a scratch match that was played in place of the forfeited match.

Westpac Mathematics Competition
Results of the Westpac Mathematics Competition completed earlier in the term have finally arrived. It is very pleasing to see some exceptional results with Keron Redman (Year 9) being placed in the top 3% of students who competed in the nation wide competition.

An Even Start—National Tuition Programme
The Australian Government is committed to ensuring that all children receive a high quality education to prepare them for the future. The ability to achieve in literacy and numeracy is essential for a successful education and a productive life.
An Even Start—National Tuition Programme assists those children who need extra help with their literacy and numeracy skills.
The Australian Government will provide parents or caregivers of eligible students with $700 of tuition in literacy or numeracy for their child.
Tuition will be available to children who do not meet minimum national benchmarks in literacy or numeracy in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. Tuition for eligible students will start from 2008.
How will I know if my child is eligible for tuition?
Students who are tested and do not meet the national minimum benchmarks in literacy and numeracy in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 will be eligible to receive tuition.
The results of state-based literacy and numeracy testing in 2007 for Years 3, 5 and 7 and the national tests for Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 to be rolled out in 2008, will indicate if a child does not meet the national benchmarks.
Parents and caregivers will receive their child’s results against the national literacy and numeracy benchmarks through their child’s school.
If your child is below the national benchmark in literacy or numeracy, your child will be eligible for this tuition. Children who are formally exempted from the test will also be eligible to receive this help.

‘Parenting with Love and Limits’ Program is a program for parents torn apart by troubled youth. Other programs deal with normal acting-out behaviour. This one is custom-designed for parents of out-of-control youth.
