Creative Writing Excellence Program

(Dr. Maria Arena, University of Sunshine Coast)

In Term 1, students from Years 10-12 who have a particular interest or talent in Creative Writing are invited to attend this course with Dr. Arena. The workshops will be held each Tuesday afternoon from 3.15 pm - 5.15 pm for 8 weeks. Students learn about the craft of effective story writing and produce a short story from their new learning. Dr Arena gives feedback and editing notes to all students to enable them to polish their story. Each story is published in an anthology at the end of the year.

Students are encouraged to enter these stories in various competitions around the country.

In Term 3, students from Years 7-9 are given the same opportunity. This enables primary school students to experience life at high school in an informal setting, mix with high school teachers and students as well as interacting with a university lecturer.

Please contact Mrs Rayna Morris for further information on (07) 4120 8446 or  rmorr67@eq.edu. Term 1 will start in Week 2. Please fill in the permission letter and return to Mrs Morris at Aldridge.

Subjects

Super Scribblers Club

This is a creative writing group formed by students with the support and guidance of the English staff. We hold a two hour session each fortnight and develop many different and enjoyable responses to a wide range of stimulus. We have loads of fun. If you are interested in joining this group, please put your name down with Mrs Morris in G Block. More details to follow.

Wide Reading

Students are expected to take part in the Wide Reading program. We have devised two lists of recommended reading available from the school library, one of which is a list of Classics. Students should be encouraged to read from both lists or request specific books from Mrs Higgins (Librarian).

Senior students will receive a list of recommended reading for each unit.
