Success in business

Term 1 – Who Wants To Be An Entrepreneur?
 
Students will learn about the various structures of business from sole traders to public companies and the role and importance of different industries within out society.  Students will explore the qualities of successful entrepreneurs and understand why enterprising behaviour is necessary to survive in today’s business world.

Business Organisations – Sole Trader and Partnerships.  Why small business can fail.

Week 3

Business Organisations – Companies (Public and Private) and Franchises.

Advantages and disadvantages of starting a business from scratch versus starting a franchise.  Guest speaker (owner of a franchise).

Week 5

Assessment Item 1.

Week 6

Assessment Item 2 handed out.  Revisit what is an Entrepreneur and characteristics.  ‘Warren Hyne’ article + example of structured overview.

Week 7

Research chosen entrepreneur.  Fill in structured overview for assignment.

Week 8

Model of magazine article.  Write article ensuring structured overview information matches article information

Magazine feature article due

Term 2 – Balancing the Books
 
Students will be introduced to the basics of bookkeeping and the double-entry system.  Students will understand the nature of accounting and the purpose of business reports.  The importance of source documents will be studied and students will be required to complete such forms, complete with GST applications.  They will apply accounting principles to record a variety of business transactions for a small business.  During this unit, students will record information from source documents into the relevant journals, post them to the ledger and prepare a trial balance.
