SIS20419 Certificate II in Outdoor Recreation

Qualification description:

This qualification reflects the role of individuals who assist with operational logistics and the delivery of recreational activities. They work under direct supervision and with guidance from those responsible for planning, finalising and delivering activities, including program managers and leaders.

Assistants use a range of fundamental activity techniques during activities and can work in indoor and outdoor recreation environments, adventure learning centres or camps. The combined skills and knowledge provided by this qualification do not provide for a job outcome as a leader and further training would be required before moving into those roles.

This qualification provides a pathway to work for any type of organisation that delivers outdoor recreation activities including commercial, not-for-profit and government organisations.

The skills in this qualification must be applied in accordance with Commonwealth and State or Territory legislation, Australian standards and industry codes of practice.

No occupational licensing, certification or specific legislative requirements apply to this qualification at the time of publication.

Duration and location:

This is a two-year course delivered in Years 11 and 12 on site at Aldridge State High School and on site at K'gari, great Keppel Island, Cooloola National Park, & Brooyar State Forest for practical assessments.​

To attain a SIS20419 certificate II in Outdoor Recreation, 11 units of competency must be achieved: ​

Delivery modes:

A range of delivery modes will be used during the teaching and learning of this qualification. These include:

  • ​face-to-face instruction
  • work-based learning

Fees:

There is a cost of $1200 associated with the completion of this course to cover camps and recreation requirements for assessment.

​Assessment:

Assessment is competency based and completed in a classroom, simulated recreation and real outdoor environments.

Units of competency are clustered and assessed in this way to replicate what occurs in an outdoor recreation facility as closely as possible.

Assessment techniques include:

  • observation
  • ​folio reviews
  • questioning
  • written and practical tasks

Work placement:

Students are provided with the opportunity via the school to do work experience, where they could work in a real recreation facility; however, it is not a mandatory requirement of the qualification.

Pathways:

This qualification may articulate into:

  • SIS20619 Certificate III in Outdoor Leadership
  • work within a variety of entry-level recreation services

RTO obligation:

The RTO guarantees that the student will be provided with every opportunity to complete the qualification. We do not guarantee employment upon completion of this qualification.

Students who are deemed competent in all 11 units of competency will be awarded a Qualification and a record of results.

Students who achieve at least one unit of competency (but not the full qualification) will receive a Statement of Attainment.​​​​​​
