About:
Sport and recreation is designed for people who like being physically active without always be restricted by the rules of the game. Learning the skills to live and manage a healthy life will benefit you long after you have left school. This subject allows you to utilise your more practical and hands on side, experience different types of sports and games, as well as learn to help others achieve their sporting and health goals.
At Aldridge:
Sport
and Recreation Studies is taught through all year levels at Aldridge. In the
junior years, sport and rec concepts are taught as part of the HPE curriculum.
Once students arrive at year 10, they can study Sport and Rec as a subject of
it’s own and follow this through until the end of year 12. Topics such as
lifesaving, strength and conditioning (gym), coaching and nutrition are some of
the key concepts learnt.
Why study Sports & Recreation?
Research shows the importance of physical activity and the role it plays in peoples' social, emotional, spiritual and physical wellbeing. The skills you will learn in Sport and Rec will assist you for life, regardless of your career pathway. Studying this subject can lead directly to successful careers in the fitness, sport, recreation and health industries however, indirectly can take you anywhere. Learning skills such as teamwork, communication, organisation and leadership are all skills transferable and vital for success in any industry.
Facilities & equipment:
Students will access the schools extensive sporting facilities including the gym and pool that are located on school grounds as well as sporting fields, sports hall, undercover and outdoor courts.

| 15 weeks combined with module 2 | Coach your team
Project | Develops students' understanding of coaching principles and allows them to demonstrate and refine their coaching skills in different physical performance contexts. |
2 | | Indigenous Games Performance | Students demonstrate performance skills required to actively participate in Indigenous/cultural games. |
3 | 15 weeks combined with module 4 | Sport Officiating Performance | Students develop knowledge and skills required to officiate sporting games and/or competitions as a referee or linesman. Students will demonstrate physical performance and refereeing skills in different contexts but will focus on touch football and/or oztag. |
4 | | Sport Nutrition Investigation | This module develops students' understanding of nutrition and nutritional requirements for performance in sport. |
5 | 8 weeks | Water Safety and Lifesaving Practical demonstration | Students learn the skills and concepts involved in water safety and lifesaving, particularly working towards the completion of a Bronze Medallion. |
6 | 10 weeks | Sports Medicine and first aid Investigation | Student learn first aid principles and injury prevention strategies for a variety of sports however will have a focus on netball and/or basketball. |
7 | 15 weeks | Event Management - Tournament organisation Project | This module develops students' understanding of policies and procedures involved in event management and tournament organisation. Students will apply their knowledge to organise and conduct a tournament with junior students, then reflect on their performance. |
8 | 8 weeks | Sport Recreation and the Fitness industry Performance | This module develops students' understanding of the resources and agencies available for sport, recreation and fitness within the community, as well as identifying the available vocational and employment pathways. Students will demonstrate physical performance in training for fitness contexts. |
Pathways:
Sport and recreation is ideal for someone wanting to become a personal trainer, coach, sporting official or run a community sporting organisation. This course leads students to further study in a Certificate II or higher in Sport and Recreation, Fitness, Outdoor Education plus many more.
Student have also gone on to study HPE teaching at university.
